ABOUT ORCHIDNET/SPECIESNET
History
OrchidNet began its evolution over 10 years ago with the founding of The Orchid
Database. This was, and is, a new type of non-profit plant conservation organization. The premise for
the organization was that many rare species are raised by private hobbyists around the World.
These hobbyists are fanatical in their devotion and highly skilled. Why not turn these people's collections
into mini-conservatories? The Orchid Database was set up to be a rare plant dating service; allowing you to
find, breed and grow any orchid.
The Orchid Database was compelled to change its commonly used name to OrchidNet by the American Orchid Society.
It grew and grew, far outstripping the capabilities of its volunteers and budget. With members and recognition from around the World OrchidNet was the
ONLY organization solely focused on trying to prevent orchid extinctions through captive breeding.
Speciesnet is a spinoff of OrchidNet; it extends the scope to all plants. It is a pragmatic effort to encourage captive breeding. We help you find
any plant and grow it effectively. We provide you the information on how to breed and the financial incentive to do so
(anyone can become a dealer and sell/trade their seedlings). We turn to you as the expert - you provide the information because
you know how to best raise your plant. As a self-service website we are able to offer more with less resources.
We hope you like what we are and help us to become better. You can volunteer or contact us to learn about money making opportunities.
Because even someone doing good deserves to do well.
Oh, and if you like what we are doing enough to want to donate something, you still can donate to The Orchid Database/OrchidNet
(a tax deduction usually applies).
